5 (Free) Must-Have Tools for Your New Side Hustle

Thinking about launching a new side hustle? Hi, I’ve been there before. And if you’re anything like me, you might be feeling a confusing mixture of fear, self-doubt, and giddiness all wrapped into one high-strung package. I get you.

When I first decided to launch my new side hustle, I was plagued by fear and self-doubt of making sure I was starting off the “right” way. I had my to-do lists, I had my login information, I had my content calendar — I had all the tools I needed to make sure my side hustle kicked off without a hitch. As I could have guessed, there were definitely hiccups along the way. I forgot to connect my Instagram and Facebook accounts, which took way to long to figure out. I forgot to register my own email address!

I guess when it comes to your new side hustle, not everything will always go to plan. But if you have an arsenal of trusted tools and applications by your side, your side hustle will have the foundation it needs to weather out all the #LessonsLearned you make along the way.

Here are my 5 favorite (and free) tools to use for your new side hustle!

For your conference call needs: Zoom

Need to jump on a client video conference? You have got to check out Zoom. I’ve used many services before, but I always come back to Zoom. It’s simple and straightforward to use, and I never feel boggled down by unintuitive schedulers. There is a free version available that supports an unlimited number of meetings!

For the designer in all of us: Canva

Canva is probably a household name for all new and aspiring side hustlers, but it’s definitely worth re-mentioning here. From its wide selection of templates to free graphics to a pretty impressive range of typefaces, Canva has really everything you need to make cohesive and on-brand materials for your project.

And it’s not just social media graphics. You can also make your own letterhead, style report documents, and create infographics. They also have a handy resource center for all the best practices on making your graphics shine.

For curating perfectly branded images: Preview App

Now that you’ve created all your beautiful, branded graphics on Canva, you need a way to artfully showcase them on Instagram – right? Call me a sucker for #Aesthetics, but a well-curated Instagram feed is the stuff of dreams.

As a side hustler or brand owner, having a curated, authentic look for your Instagram account is just another way you can step above the crowd. While I am sure your content is amazing already, it never hurts to amp up the extra-ness once and awhile. I personally love Preview App because it’s a one-stop-shop: you have your photo editor, hashtag recommendations, scheduler, analytics, and more.

For keeping #AllTheThings on track: Wunderlist

I love to-do lists, but I hate lists that are cumbersome and too complex. Just give me a simple list, please – all I want to do is cross out things. I love using Wunderlist because it is exactly like your pen and paper list: you enter in all your items and cross out as you go. There are more in-depth settings, too, but for a to-do list purist like myself, it checks all the boxes (pun intended).

For staying healthy and happy: Apple Bedtime

After a busy day of side hustling, there is nothing like a good night sleep. And I want you to take that seriously. Inadequate sleep is linked to a whole range of adverse health effects, from high blood pressure to mood disorders to hypertension. While I know you’ve got to commit to your grind, also commit to keeping yourself healthy and happy with restful sleep.

Personally, I use the Apple Bedtime app to keep me synced up to a regular sleep time schedule – and it’s something I don’t compromise with. Every night at 9:30 pm, I get a notification from my phone telling me I have 15-, 30-, or 45-minutes left until bedtime. That reminder helps me wrap up what I’m doing and focus on recharging for the next day. Give it a try! There are tons of apps like that out there, I just like the free things.
